O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High school in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials prior to making the move into Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward. She made her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular part on the ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on several other shows, and appeared in made for television and independent movies. Donna Abandando is her first appearance as a leading character on ABC's NYPD Blue.
