Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. As a young girl, Ford was battling anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her show in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
